Virginia State Police Mourn Loss of Area 42 Sergeant
At approximately 2:20 a.m., Saturday (Jan. 11, 2014), the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about
a vehicle crash in the county on Chatham Road/Route 57, approximately 170 feet west of Route 9728/Pennrail Lane. When rescue crews arrived, they found a blue Chevrolet Impala crashed into a road sign. Still seated inside the vehicle was Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi. State police were immediately notified and responded to the scene. Sgt. Phillippi, 65, was transported to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Virginia State Police are still investigating the cause and circumstances of the sergeant’s crash.
Sgt. Phillippi was assigned to the Area 42 Office in Martinsville, which is part of the Virginia State Police
Salem Division. He was working the overnight supervisory shift for the Salem Division at the time of his death.
The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police have requested that all Virginia law enforcement shroud their badges in honor of Sgt. Phillippi through the day of his funeral. Additional information regarding memorial arrangements will be posted on the VACP website as they become available.
